Heirloom Audio Review

About Heirloom Audio, their goal is to incorporate history and bring it to life through their dramas while keeping the audience engaged in the storyline. G. A. Henty is an author for historical fiction during the period of the 1800s and has wrote over a hundred books. Some of the audio dramas you might recognize G.A Henty for, just to name a few: Captain Bayley’s Heir, In the Reign of Terror, The Cat of Bubastes, Beric The Briton.

For this review we listened to a Christian Audio Drama that is created from Heirloom Audio. We received the physical product of the new G. A. Henty theatre presentation of For The Temple in the form of a 2 cd-set. We also were given a 51 page downloadable study guide. Each section of questions may cover four to eight minutes of the audio drama. The study guide would be a great help aid to parents who want to discuss the storyline further or it can be used as a written assignment. The study guide includes three areas of questions that cover each chapter of the audio: Listening Well, Thinking Further and Defining Words. The study guide not only helped with discussion on the storyline but it also made understanding the culture and time frame.

To be honest, In the beginning when we first started listening to the audio, I forgot about the study guide. We were caught up in the adventure that the first cd we did not use the study guide. So I had to go back and do a quick recap. For the second cd I had my kids listen and follow along with the study guide. I only had them select 3 questions in each section of chapters to answer and then we used the vocabulary in each section.

The Temple story begins in AD 70, while following the adventures of a sixteen year old boy of Gamala named John whose dream is to marry and take over his family farm but as the storyline begins we later see that Johns plans are interrupted with other tasks.
His first adventure begins while visiting with Mary, a fourteen year old girl whom he will later become engaged to. Mary wanted to go out on the Sea of Galilee in Johns boat. With weather brewing at a distant John did not want to take her out but eventually John gives in to Mary and they end up caught in a storm. They are quickly rescued by Josephus who scolded John for taking the boat out in the storm. Rather then shift the blame on Mary, John takes the blame and quickly apologizes then offers his gratitude to Josephus for rescuing them. Later John joins Josephus serving in the military and eventually he becomes the leader to a group of patriots fighting against the Romans. After a brief time of slavery in Alexandria, John was able to return home. For his success in the military, his natural ability for leadership and his bravery he earned recognition and favor with Titus, the soon to be emperor of Rome.

My middle daughter says, "This audio is filled with pain, love, sadness, happiness and some action. She could see this drama play out in an animated series." I could tell my son enjoyed the audio by his reaction to when the battle begins, he quickly paused the disc to run and get his light saber and the next thing I knew we had a war in our living room going on during the battle on the disc. My youngest daughter also enjoyed this audio remarking how it would be awesome in an animation, but she remarks that even as an audio she could visualize as the story was taking place. This really is one of the best audio dramas we have heard in a while.
