Tied 2 Teaching Review

Matthew Kelly is the founder of our next review Tied 2 Teaching. What I like about this review is that he believes learning should be more then drilling and books, he believes learning should be fun and engaging. Not only does his material allow the lessons to be filled with fun he incorporates reading and critical thinking through his experiments  while teaching lessons around some history, science, math and engineering. All of this is something I have said and supported for years. There should always be room for some sort of hands on learning in school.

The product we got to review is the STEM Activities, Full Year of Challenges with Close Reading. This material is noted to be for grades three through five. We received this material in a pdf format and downloaded to our computer saving it in our review folder.

I again note that this is one of them reviews I am adding in to the LIKE and HANDS ON category. The lessons are great stem activities for kids needing a break from drilling and textbook work or just to be included in with daily/weekly learning. The stem activities cover various topics each month and during the seasons. A few topics to name are: 100th Day of School STEM Challenge – SPAGHETTI TOWER Design Challenge, CIVIL RIGHTS MONUMENT Design Challenge, Presidents Day STEM Challenge – Lincoln’s Cabin Challenge, St. Patrick’s Day STEM Challenge – Build a Leprechaun Trap, Earth Day STEM Challenge – Up cycled Birdhouse, Giant Pyramid Challenge and many others. So from January to December you are covered with weekly activities.

We started out using the foil boat. My oldest took charge of the boat making. Before she made the boat she took time to think about her design. She is already pretty gifted in art crafting origami's and other things in creativity. So I was not surprised with the results of her design.

To begin the activity the student is asked a list of questions which deals in critical thinking drills, multiple choice questions or ask and answer in your opinion. Your student will have some reading to do in the activities and there will be questions that go along with the reading and other questions will have your student researching some history for facts to find their answers. Then the challenge will be noted along with the materials needed to complete the challenge in the activity. There will be some sample ideas and just like if you were doing a science fair project you will then have a few questions about what you think will happen or what should happen? Your theory and hypothesis so to speak. Your student will then fill in pages about their idea and why they think it will or will not work. Test your experiment and then come back and answer questions about your experiment. (I didn't snap all of her folding and planning, to be honest that slipped my mind). But here is the testing part of her project.

I'm not surprised she did well with this creation. It did not sink with the amount money shown in the pictures, but the heavier we made it you could tell it was sitting lower in the water. Given the size of the foil I would of thought it would of sunk. She was pretty pleased with the results. We also started working on the Civil Rights Monument to go along with our Government History learning especially since around here Spring is full of Civil War activities and live reenactments and other things around that time frame, I figured it would be the perfect time to begin that activity. Unfortunately, that activity was not completely finished because our family member went to the hospital and passed then. Overall I am pleased and would recommend these stem activities. I am just sorry we were not able to complete all of the second activity.

Our crew is reviewing the same product but various other topics. You can read more about their review by clicking the attached linked image below. You can also follow Tied 2 Teaching at any of the social media links below:
